FAQ
DOES NIESSING USE NATURAL DIAMONDS OR LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS?
Niessing exclusively sets natural diamonds and does not use lab-grown diamonds. The reason: from Niessing's perspective, the massive decline in prices and resulting loss in value of lab-grown diamonds are incompatible with the quality standards and values of a premium jewelry piece. The emotional value of a natural diamond remains unique and irreplaceable. For customers, this means that a Niessing jewelry piece, engagement ring or wedding ring is always set with natural diamonds.
WHAT DO THE 4CS OF DIAMONDS MEAN?
The 4Cs are the four internationally recognized criteria for evaluating diamonds: Carat (weight), Cut, Color and Clarity. Carat refers to weight, with one carat corresponding to 0.2 grams. Cut describes shape and brilliance — only a perfect cut brings out a diamond's characteristic fire. Color assesses the finest variations in color, from exceptional white through white to slightly colored diamonds. Clarity describes whether a diamond has inclusions and, if so, how many. Niessing adds a fifth criterion to the 4Cs: Confidence. All diamonds are additionally examined in Niessing's own diamond laboratory.
HOW MANY GRAMS IS ONE CARAT?
One carat (ct) corresponds to 0.2 grams. The term derives from the seeds of the carob tree (Greek: kerátion), which were once used as a unit of measurement. These seeds weigh an average of 0.2 grams and vary only slightly in weight — this led to the carat, which is still used today as the unit of measurement for diamonds.
ARE NIESSING DIAMONDS CONFLICT-FREE?
Yes. Niessing exclusively uses natural, conflict-free diamonds. All diamonds are subject to the System of Warranties of the Kimberley Process. This ensures that Niessing only uses diamonds from ethically responsible sources. In addition, Niessing examines the quality of all diamonds in its own diamond laboratory.
AS OF WHAT SIZE DO NIESSING DIAMONDS RECEIVE A CERTIFICATE?
Diamonds from 0.30 ct receive an individual certificate. Regardless of any external certificate, Niessing additionally examines all diamonds in its own diamond laboratory.
DOES NIESSING EXAMINE ITS DIAMONDS ITSELF?
Yes. Niessing operates its own diamond laboratory, where the quality of all diamonds is examined — independently of any existing certificates. This also applies to diamonds supplied by customers themselves.
DOES NIESSING ALSO OFFER COLORED DIAMONDS?
Yes. Niessing works wit brilliant white diamonds as well as diamonds in natural colors. Their color occurs because, in addition to carbon, diamonds almost always contain tiny traces of other elements. In the Niessing Spannring® Lucia, for example, naturally colored brilliant-cut diamonds harmonize with the Niessing Colors.
CAN NIESSING USE MY OWN DIAMOND IN A JEWELRY PIECE?
That depends on the jewelry piece. For selected jewelry pieces, Niessing can use customer-supplied natural diamonds from 0.50 carat. The supplied diamonds must meet Niessing's quality standards and are examined in Niessing's own diamond laboratory before being used. If you would like Niessing to use your own diamond, please contact a Niessing Store, a Niessing Partner or our Concierge Service.
HOW CAN I CONFIRM THE AUTHENTICITY OF MY NIESSING DIAMOND JEWELRY?
Every Niessing jewelry piece receives an individual ID number that can be used to trace its history and authenticity. On most jewelry pieces, this ID number is engraved directly onto the piece. For certain designs, engraving is not possible due to the design itself. In these cases, you will find the ID number on the corresponding certificate.
ARE DIAMOND-SET RINGS SUITABLE FOR EVERYDAY WEAR?
For most diamond-set rings, the answer is yes. Niessing jewelry is designed to last a lifetime. However, the level of care required depends on the jewelry piece: fully diamond-set rings or solitaire rings require more care than simple rings. Wearing them during physical, manual or sporting activities is only recommended to a limited extent. For diamond jewelry worn every day, Niessing recommends a complimentary inspection every one to two years (shipping costs may occur). The jewelry can be sent through a Niessing Store or a Niessing Partner.
CAN I ADD MORE BRILLIANT-CUT DIAMONDS TO A DIAMOND RING LATER?
Yes, this is precisely the idea behind Mémoire rings. No matter how many brilliant-cut diamonds mark the beginning, there are many occasions to add more: the birth of a child, a wedding anniversary or a milestone shared together. For individual advice, please contact a Niessing Store, a Niessing Partner or the Concierge Service.
WHICH DIAMOND CUTS DOES NIESSING OFFER?
A diamond's cut defines its shape and brilliance — only a perfect cut brings out its characteristic fire. In addition to the classic brilliant cut, Niessing also uses special diamond shapes in selected designs, including Princess, Oval, Emerald, Trilliant, Baguette and Teardrop. Niessing Amatis, for example, is available with a selection of different diamond cuts. The choices depend on the individual jewelry piece.
